From CNN: Television evangelist Pat Robertson suggested Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine retribution for the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, which Robertson opposed. (see story)

I must admit i do not like ariel sharon, but i think that the fact that he is a husky, 77 year old male in a high stress job is the reason he had a stroke.

yeah, God was cool with him murdering A-rabs and stealin' their lands, but when he was gonna back off the killin' and the stealin' a teensy bit, god done smote his ass for backpeddlin.

I really hate having to defend religion as a concept to my atheist friends, it seems for every Thomas Aquinas, Moses Maimonedes, and Mahatma Ghandi we have ten Robertsons, Fallwells, and Bin Ladens.

ummm...i think your "reason #" clicker is off...by my count, the number is fast approaching one million. ;-)
ps. robertson's (and the christian right in general) investment in Israel is a frightening reality--he can critisize sharon all he wants, but in all reality, he and the CR are mobilizing their base in support of Israel...

it's funny, I went to a lecture by Karen Armstrong on Christian Fundamentalism in America. She talked about how important it is for them that Israel is secure for Jews so that the biblical "prophecy" will be fulfilled and Christ will return...and he will then kill all the Jews!

Da, yeah in terms of religion I think people evaluate its role in a skewed way. They see the bad and ignore the good. People could do worse things with their time than hang out in a place, or read from a book, or hang out with some people who remind them not to lie, cheat, and steal on a regular basis.

Also, it is easy to whip out examples like the crusades or al-qaedah but in recent history when governments try to establish consciously secular societies you don't magically get freer societies. China, former Soviet Union, North Korea, etc. The French Revolution was also anti-clerical but you also had the Reign of Terror.

Silencer, yes.. it is very bizzare. Christian Zionism isn't necessarily pro-Jewish (In fact, at times Robertson has also been accused of anti-semitism). But Christian Zionism is just in favor of a very specific reading of Biblical prophecy.

But the prophecies are all ambiguous. Some mainstream Christians, in fact, say that the prophecies Robertson refers to were already fulfulled when the Jews came back after the Babylonian captivity.

So Robertson would by a couple thousand years anyway.

I gotta say, when you look at Robertson's smitings behavior, it makes me think that Sharon isn't the only one with an arterial flow problem.
