more on immigration

To be honest, it is slightly surprising to me how much people seem to be coming together around issues of immigration. I've tended to think of immigration as an issue which (literally) evokes borders between people and sets up a dichotomy of "us" and "them". But recently, concerns about immigration seem to be a real galvanzing and unifying force across many different communities. Of course, it has been bringing Latino groups together, but it hasn't stopped there.

Today there was a program on WNYC about blacks and immigration, all of the black callers were negative. The local hip-hop stations have had shows and alm,ost all of the callers wer negative. The people I talk to are negative towards immigration. At the immigration rally of 200,000 in NYC there were maybe a hundred African-Americans.

I see no solidarioty between African-Americans and Latino immigrants. That is the fantasy of some Latino organizations and some black thinkers, but in practice only happens when it helps both groups.

Hi! I found your Blog and BlogSearch, I think the dialogue on immigration is very important and must be discussed from all perspectives.

With your insights I would love to have you take a look at a mini-series I wrote last week on the subject and, if you want to, join in the dialogue…

Yes, even the article I linked to on black media spoke about how many African-Americans have misgivings about immigration.
