In These Times: Farrakhan Steps Back by Salim Muwakkil is an incredibly thoughtful piece about the implications of Farrakhan's declining role within the Nation of Islam. Although in the wider media Farrakhan is often dismissed as a fanatic, Muwakkil argues (persuasively I think) that in the context of the Nation, Farrakhan's political skill has been a moderating, unifying factor.

Assalamu `alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
It is interesting to note that Farrakhan took his shahadah in 1975 along with the other member of the NOI. He was also the imam for few years at the Malik Shabazz Masjid on 116th Street in Harlem. It was till around the early 1980 that he went against the leadership of Warith-ud-Deen Muhammad and revived the kufr teachings of the Unhonorable Elijah (Poole) Muhammad.

The guy was a cheerleader for Malcolm's death. He will never be okay by me. Though certainly, some much worse people (in terms of craziness/fanatacism) could have taken the leadership role.

Actually there are several splinter groups that still adhere to the teachings of the Unhonorable Elijah (Poole) Muhammad.
To add to you point Farrakhan was in Newark (though he was not living there at the time) on the same day of Imam El-Hajj Malik Ash-Shabbaz's (Malcom X) death. Some have speculated that he had something to do with the death. And Allahu a`lam
