african & caribbean muslim marriage event

Since only a minority of hits to Planet Grenada are coming from the UK, I'm thinking of the following as a springboard for discussion as well as a simple announcement:

Islamic Circles Presents

AFRICAN & CARIBBEAN MUSLIM MARRIAGE EVENT

Date: Saturday 18th August 2007
Time: 1pm - 4pm
Venue: Room 405, 4th Floor,
Birkbeck College, University of London,
Malet Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1E 7HX

DEADLINE FOR BOOKING: WEDNESDAY 15TH AUGUST 2007

Light refreshments will be provided.
Registration will be at 1pm
and latecomers will be penalised.

Prior registration is necessary and please book online at our website http://www.muslimmarriageevents.org/.
This event is for sincere and serious people only,
not time wasters and people with bad manners.

To book or for more information
please contact: Tel: 07956 983 609
E-mail: marriage@islamiccircles.org
Website: http://www.muslimmarriageevents.org/

The most interersting and controversial aspect to the announcement was the brief paragraph explaining the reason for the event:

Because of the unfortunate 'racism' amongst certain Muslim communities, and the constant rejection and time wasting, a special marriage event especially geared towards to Muslims of African and Carribean origin has been organised. People of all statuses are welcome. Non African and Carribean are also welcome if they 'really serious' and open to marrying them.
So especially as an Afro-Caribbean Muslim myself, I wonder why there would be a special reluctance to marriage with Afro-Caribbean Muslims on the part of "certain Muslim communities"? Also, does this reluctance constitute racism? In the long run, will Afro-Caribbean Muslims in the UK self-segregate (due to external influences) and form a distinct group? Would this be a positive development or a negative one?\
Discuss.

As-salaamu alaikum,

Apart from (By my estimate) 90% of black reverts are male and 90% of reverts are salafi or la madhabi. (I'm a Black revert on the Maliki madhab, you do the maths) we have a very timely survey published today :

http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/article2838642.ece
Asians less likely to 'marry out'
Published: 06 August 2007
"Five times as many young Asians as white people would only marry someone of their own race, a survey has revealed.

Nearly half of Asians aged between 16 and 34 would only marry someone from the same racial group, compared to just 9 per cent of white respondents.

The survey, by ICM for the BBC Asian Network, also found that more than half of young Asians would not consider dating a black person. And it showed that five times as many young Asians as whites believe homosexuality to be immoral.

Commissioned as part of a season examining the state of mind of Britain's Asian population, the survey found UK Asians hold dramatically different attitudes to friends and relationship than that of their white peers.

According to the survey, nearly half - 44 per cent - of the Asian respondents would only marry another Asian. Eighty-seven per cent of white people said they would consider a mixed marriage but only 53 per cent of Asians felt the same.

The study showed that, while 83 per cent of white respondents would consider going out with a black person, just 44 per cent of Asians would do so."

Wa alaikum salaam,

Wow, interesting survey. I guess there is a pretty strong difference. I wonder if "PC" ness is a factor in how people respond (i.e. to what extent are the white respondents answering according to what they are 'supposed' to say as opposed to what they would actually do?) Just a thought. But thanks for the information.

Not surprised by those stats at all. Though my original thought was "who cares" since I'm only concerned with black people (of whatever stripe) getting together.

I just wanted to say that I generally have a no-censorship attitude when it comes to comments so I'm probably going to allow all sorts of responses but at the same time I'm not vouching for the good intentions of anyone who offers themselves for marriage...

I know some people in muslim communities see black converts as wanting to marry their women, pakistanis/somalis, i dont think its good higlighting in the event the racism in muslim communities (making out as if black men are interested in women outside their race only). Its not always racism as well but cultural reasons, i dont beleive that two people can match because they share a religion. Its essential in the long term to establish muslim african-carribean community but i am pessimistic about that because of the numbers of failed marriages and going abroad to get married.

As salaamu alaikum

Its' definetly a cultural thing, I struck up the similar conversation with a brother the other day at the Masjid, he (being an English revert)pointed out that his son would be unable to marry any of the Pakistani girls in our Masjid even though he prays with their fathers, and they get along fine, lets face it people are pretty insular, Asians more than most!
I had an unsuccessful marriage with a Somali woman, and will tell you from experience its difficult, through language, customs etc. but surely where God creates barriers He also creates openings!

As Salaam Alaikum,
Yes, i agree with this post about racism. Even though the Prophet (may peace be upon him) emulated equality and also inter racial marriages (The prophet may peace be upon him married Sawdah raziallahu tala anhu who was a Abysinian Black Lady) our ummah still holds on to racism.
I am planning to marry a Caribbean Muslimah revert who espouses all the Islamic qualities i wanted by am facing opposition from my family.
But I have taken the courage with the help of Allah to go through this Inshallah.
BTW i have read fatwas where it is legal for a man or woman to go against the parents wishes of marrying some one whom the parent reject for "Non Islamic" reasons.
That is if your parents reject a good muslim guy or a girl just because he or she belongs to a different race or color, then yes you can summon the islamic elder and go get married.
I have seen such cases in Saudi Arabia.
Ma Salaam,
Abu Abdullah
