this seems nice, I wa about to submit something, but seeming that they charge a $5.00 submission fee, then give away a grand or more in prizes, this seems more the equivilant of a lottery than it does a competition.
:(

I haven't really studied the Islamic definition of "gambling" in depth. But I think those kinds of competitions are ok. (where the competitors contribute money and the winner is given the pool.) I'm assuming it has to be based on some kind of skill though.

If there is a skill involved, and there are participants who did not contribute to the pot, then a minority of scholars permitted it.
Yet the majority still saw it as gambling.
This is of the top of my head, inshallah I will review the issue.

All in All I think the objective of the whole thing is good, increasing praise and admiration for the Prophet (S) among muslims, in addition to promoting the literary arts.

Q1. Why do you charge an administration fee?

Under the guidance and counsel of highly qualified Muslim scholars, IslamicPoetry.org has taken serious precaution to ensure that the use of our financial support is lawful and in compliance with the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. We derive our support from the following sources:

* Donations
* Sponsors’ Advertising
* Entry Fees for the Poetry Competition

Funding for prizes will be derived strictly from donations and advertising from sponsors. Monies from entry fees will be used towards website development and procuring services, advertising, administration costs of the competition, and payments to judges and volunteers, if required. We have established a nominal entry fee to prevent people from using this portal as a means to express adverse opinions about out beloved Messenger, Allah bless him and give him peace. By no means will any money from the entry fee pool be used to fund prizes.
