Lupe on Islam:
"Well, I was born Muslim, so Islam plays a part in my everything I do, to a certain extent. I'm not like the poster boy for Islam you know what I'm saying? So it's like I still got my flaws and stuff like that, so I don't really wear that on my sleeve. [But] I'm really with some underlying consciousness, no matter what it is that I can talk about -cocaine, or I can talk about carrying guns. I've been literally carrying guns since I was five, like four or five years old, simply because my father was in the military and he wanted to teach us how to shoot. I've been shooting AK's since I was as baby, you know? I don't like to glorify ignorance or nothing like that, but I know you need to – you can talk about it in certain aspects. You'll still get the people who don't listen unless you're talking about nonsense. Catch their ear, and then at the same time, teach them something, you know? It [also] plays on the extra curricular stuff that happens about, about being like a rapper and being in the music business like going to – all right, I don't go to clubs, I don't drink, I don't smoke, you know like my whole – the whole groupie situation is shut down."

I remember that retard at The Source (motto; totally irrelevant since 1996) talking shit about Lupe implying that since he was a Muslim, he was an "Islamo-Fascist" and musing that it would be wierd to have a famous Muslim musician out there. Guess he's never heard of Mos Def, Beanie Seigel, Rick James, Everlast, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Murphy, or any of those other struggling small timers :-P
Jimmy Cliff say:
the way i see it as a nubian man looking for his roots again there were many doors and classrooms to go through and islam was just one of those classrooms for me, rastafari was another, christianity another, judaism and so on. i feel that i have graduated from all of them”
Yeah, at one point I was thinking of doing an entry on Jimmy Cliff but then found that same quote. At one point he probably was Muslim but now he claims to have "graduated".
But I think all the religions (the major ones at least, and several of the not so major ones) have more "grades" to them than any one normal person can "pass" in a lifetime.
(stay in school)
But my shayk says he's transcended Shariah and become a Wali! You suddenly smarter than my Shayk, Abdul-Halim? :-P
Anyway, I stand corrected on Jimmy Cliff. So add Jurassic 5 to the list in his place.
salaam,
i like lupe. f&l is pretty good.
i've had mixed opinions about this thought:
"Catch their ear, and then at the same time, teach them something, you know?"
So often, the harm outweighs the good. thats in general though. and there are plenty of exceptions.
you should check out blakstone. i been banging it out for a few good months.......
"you know like my whole – the whole groupie situation is shut down.
