Even though I use the term "modern-day Moor" I should probably clarify that I'm not from Morocco. Also, although I think the movement is interesting from a cultural perspective, I'm also not a part of
Moorish Science which has a distinct
Circle 7 Koran as their scripture. I explain what I
do mean by "Moorish". elsewhere on the blog.
I like to say that I am a Maroon-American after the free Maroon communities of slaves, indentured servants, natives, etc... So much of that history is imagined, mythic, we know so little, but it tells a myth I want to tell for myself.
ReplyDeletehmmm... what does it mean to tell a story for yourself and consciously see it as a myth?
ReplyDeleteSo what's exactly a modern MOOR?! i started reading on "Moorish Science Temple of America"...n' i was going like "what the hell is that all about?!!!"...
ReplyDeletea friend of mine gave me a CD for a new Danish hip hop band "Outlandish"...so far i like them but the word MOOROS is repeated like hundreds of times in their songs...so what is it exactly?...i need an insider info.
hmm.. the different uses of the term "moor" aren't necessarily refering to the same thing. When I use it, I basically mean Afro-Hispanic Muslim.
